After working full time in the fitness industry for a number of years, I realised that the true path to health and fitness is in the mind, and that each person needs to understand what works best for them as an individual to be able to achieve their goals.
Following 6 years studying psychology through Massey University and The Open Polytechnic, I formed mind+health, with the aim of helping individuals to discover their barriers to making the changes necessary for living a healthy, happy life and exploring strategies to overcoming these barriers.
I believe that every individual has things in life that they enjoy and excel at. I also believe that every individual also has their own personal physical and mental barriers to overcome. My role is to assist people to overcome their barriers, and find the path to living the life they want.
mind+health work has two sides: One is working with adults who know they need to make changes in their lifestyles, or adhere to an exercise programme, or diet, but are unsure how to break their current habits of living. The second is work with high achieving youth (13 to 25 years) and their families to decrease the amount of pressure that can come with unrelenting high standards they expect of themselves.
I work from a combination of psychodynamic, humanist, and cognitive behavioural theories to help individuals discover what in life is meaningful for them, where behaviours, thoughts and emotions originate from, and strategies going forward that they can use to help get closer to their ideal self.
When I have time of my own, you will often find me riding the mountain bike trails in the hills, out on the water fishing or waterskiing, or on a turf hitting a hockey ball around. I get a lot of enjoyment out of staying fit and active, and love to see others getting the same enjoyment out of their lives.
